Congratulations to the Fall 2016 and Intersession 2017 Winners

1st Place: Bowen Chen “Little Stranger”
Bowen Chen, sophomore Materials Science major, participated on the Tropical Biology & Evolution program in Ecuador and the Galapagos during the 2017 Intersession. The students saw so many seals on the Galapagos that they almost got bored of them. Bowen spotted this seal on the last day in the Galapagos who posed so perfectly he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to capture a photo.

2nd Place: Anna Hasche-Kluender “Rainbow Algae”
Anna Hasche-Kluender, senior Mol Cell Bio major, participated on the IES Program in Santiago, Chile for the Fall 2016 semester. Anna traveled to the Atacama Desert with the other students on her program. They left around 4am to tour the El Tatio Geysers at sunrise in the cold desert. After the tour, they visited a nearby hot spring. The bright colors in this photo came from algae that had grown in a pool of stagnant water. In the background you can see a ravine leading to the hot spring, desert hills, and the tip of a far away mountain.

3rd Place: Ian Markham “The Times We Had”
Junior and International Studies major, Ian Markham, studied at the University of Tartu in Estonia for the Fall 2016 semester. This photo was taken above a famous overlook in the capital of Estonia, Tallinn. Ian and his friend were waiting for this girl to leave so that they could capture the words “The Times We Had” painted on the wall. The girl wouldn’t leave and persisted to throw snowballs at the words. Ian decided just to take a photo with the girl in it and accidentally had his phone in black and white mode. The result was a gorgeous artistic photo and the words became something of a mantra for Ian in Estonia.
